EPRI: Electric Power Research Institute

Smart Grid Resource Center

EPRIze — Data Science Innovation Opportunities for Students and Researchers

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) is seeking "Big Ideas" for "Big Data" to foster advanced approaches to data science, data analytics, and power system situational awareness for the distribution utility sector. The sky is the limit for ideas that can be explored. Example topics can range from machine learning approaches to advance system and asset awareness, use of IoT technologies for faster situational intelligence, distributed computing to reduce bandwidth requirements for data transfer, emerging analytics techniques and approaches for distribution system awareness, and so on.

The total number of projects that will be awarded funding under this initiative is anticipated to be three to five. However, the proposal review team, consisting of the EPRI data analytics staff, will have the final determination on awards based on the quality and the quantity of the submittals. The total project funding will be up to $100,000. Project durations will range between six months and one year with an option for recipients to do paid internships on their proposed work scopes.

Don't let the lack of data impede your submission. EPRI has a data repository from which the BIG IDEA can be birthed from and tested. To be considered for this opportunity, simply submit a BIG IDEA proposal to the EPRI project managers ddorr@epri.com and jgreen@epri.com for consideration.

The following information must be supplied in your proposal:

  • Name, email, and phone number of the submitter or team leader
  • Statement of the problem/challenge being addressed (100 words or less)
  • Overview of the proposed solution (100 words or less)
  • Background information related to the BIG IDEA (100 words or less)
  • Notable challenges to overcome with the BIG IDEA (100 words or less)
  • Required datasets needed to solve the BIG IDEA
  • Type of delivered solution (code, application, report, etc.)
  • Estimated schedule

Deadline for submissions is no later than 2:00 P.M. Eastern Standard Time (EST) on December 1, 2017. Each submission will be evaluated by the EPRI data analytics staff on the technical content and capabilities (45%), price (25%), related experience (15%), and acceptance of typical EPRI Terms and Conditions (15%). Upon submission, one of the EPRI project managers will acknowledge receipt of the BIG IDEA proposal by email.

Notification of the project award(s) will be on December 15, 2017. You will receive an e-mail notification of EPRI's decision from one of the project managers. This is the only official notification of selection. Please note that EPRI will not authorize the start of work or incurrence of costs to be reimbursed prior to execution of a formal project agreement. No submission will be considered an offer to contract or a binding contract between any candidate and EPRI. A written contract may be executed after a candidate is chosen by EPRI, giving rise to mutual obligations for the chosen candidate and EPRI. EPRI reserves the right to accept or reject any submission. EPRI reserves the right to amend or cancel the process at any point prior to executing an appropriate service contract. If the successful candidate fails to execute a contract following selection, EPRI reserves the right to award the contract to another candidate. The quote preparation costs shall be borne by the individual candidates. EPRI is not bound to any course of action due to the release of this information and/or EPRI's receipt of a submission from a candidate.
